When people think about ways to cut their utility bills, they may overlook the power of windows. Roughly half of a typical home energy bill covers the cost of heating and cooling the air inside. This time of year in many climates, the windows can do a lot of the work.

As I was reading today about how the U.S. is falling behind nations including Britain in carbon-reducing technologies, I kept thinking of my recent visit to the CSU Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory.The place doesn’t look like much – it’s a drafty red brick building built in 1936 that used to be the Fort Collins Power Plant and was turned over to the university when no longer needed.
